Ho, Ho, Whoa!
So, there you are on Christmas after all the presents have been unwrapped as you watch the kids play with their new toys. Or maybe you don’t have kids but are visiting the folks. Maybe the folks are visiting you. Or perhaps you’re all alone on Christmas, a sad thought but not uncommon, and wondering what to do with yourself.
Well, wherever you are and whoever you are with, the day can crawl along without anything on television to break up the moments when the conversation dulls and the room goes quiet. It’s especially tough on holidays and get-togethers when there’s nothing to divert your attention and it’s just you, your Aunt Rose, and a cousin who looks familiar but you can never remember her name.
However, there is good news for those who love to watch sports no matter what day of the week, or what holiday we’re celebrating. 12:00 PM (ESPN) – New Orleans Pelicans at Miami Heat
It will be interesting to see how much heat Miami brings to their second regular-season game after an unexpected run to the NBA Finals last season. Meanwhile, the Pelicans will play their second game on the road after tipping off the season in Toronto. New Orleans ended last year on the outside looking in on the playoffs and will hope to right that ship this season.
2:30 PM (ABC) – Golden State Warriors at Milwaukee Bucks
The Warriors went from the penthouse to the outhouse in one season but now they are healthy and armed with a new rim protector in James Wiseman, the No. 2 overall picks in the 2020 draft. The young center will be pitted against one of the best in the game when he squares off against Giannis Antetokounmpo, aka The Greek Freak.
4:30 PM (ABC) – Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints
Football on Christmas! Yes, there really is a Santa Claus! The Vikings will presumably be fighting for a wild card berth while the Saints will try to seal the deal on another NFC South title. Drew Brees will be looking to carve up a susceptible Minnesota defensive backfield while Kirk Cousins and his twin terrors, Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen, will try to counterpunch the Saints vaunted aerial attack.
5:00 PM (ABC) – Brooklyn Nets at Boston Celtics
This rivalry is at a whole new level with former Celtic, Kyrie Irving, returning to the place he called home for two years. Kyrie didn’t exactly endear himself to the Celtic faithful, particularly after he failed to suit up for the postseason and opted out of his contract thereafter. These two teams are considered among the best in the Eastern Conference which makes this one must-see-tv.
8:00 PM (ABC/ESPN) – Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Lakers
It’s Showtime in the NBA when LeBron James and the world champion Lakers welcome the sharpshooting Mavericks to Tinseltown. Dallas has one of the brightest, young talents in the game with the incomparable Luka Doncic knocking it down from downtown. This will be a high-flying affair from tip-off to the final buzzer!
10:30 PM (ESPN) – Los Angeles Clippers at Denver Nuggets
The Clippers were supposed to contend with their crosstown neighbors for the Western Conference crown and a trip into the NBA Finals last season. But that showdown never occurred because the Clips fell off the rails and bowed to the Nuggets in the semifinals. Speaking of which, it is in fact that same Denver Nuggets squad that will welcome the Clippers to Ball Arena in downtown Denver. Can the Clippers get their redemption?
